Blue

"Only the Fireborn understand blue." -Carl Sandburg

Only the Fireborn understand blue. This line stands out to me.

It makes me think.

Children always draw fire as red and orange.

But true fire, at the base of the flame, is blue. Blue

Only someone who was born into fire, raised in flames, and burned time and time again, will understand how dangerous the color blue is.

Bibliophile...

I adore reading so much! It brings me to a parallel world. Especially when it's Myths, Sorcery, etc. are the the ones it talks about. It's also my escape when a conflict is surrounding me.

I had fun in Mr. Riemann's class this week because he is the best teacher ever!! I taught me many things  like spamming his email...... Me and my friend love doing that! My friend Amena is in love with Criss Angel and we love to right it all over the the board. Anyways, he is an amazing teacher and we learn lots. Take him for tech class!!!!!

Sea Star Guts

This week in Bamfield Club, Mr. Riemann and Ms. B brought out funky, starshaped blobs, called Sea Stars.

Then, we were all handed gloves, and a pair of Glasses. The excitement was unbearable!

And, to confirm our hopes, we found ourselves holding scalpels, surgical scissors, and a dissection tray.

The suspense was unbearable.

We waited, waited to slice the stars and discover the disgusting innards of the creatures.

Finally, we got the good-to-go and started slicing our stars.

The first step was cutting off a leg. Inside, there was a goopy digestive tract, along with.... a spine?!

That's right, sea stars have spines!

It was so tiny, but still strong. (believe me, I know. It took 3 minutes to saw through that dang spinal cord!)

Then we flipped our battered friend over, and examined his mouth, a circle in the middle of the five legs.

All the while this was happening, goopy greenish-yellow guts were spilling out, moving slow as mollases.

I think it smelled like watermelon.

Now came the fun part... Cutting the top off.

We slashed the top skin off the sea star, eager to see what was inside.

Now that I think about it, we were almost psycopathic, eagerly awaiting the massacre of a dead corpse.

Inside, a circle of bone extended to the spines, that went to the end of each leg. Guts spilled out, and the infamous 'dead-juice' flooded the dissection tray.

I still think it smelled like watermelon.

We named our poor subject 'Soggy' because he was so mushy and goopy when we got him.

We sawed off all five legs, prodded, poked and sliced our unlucky fellow.

I wanted to eat him.

Now, Soggy rests in peace in the lovely garbage can.

last night was a great night for me because of lots of reasons. First i got to watch lots of cool movies and tv shows such as Predators, Super 8, and i saw the most funniest show ever, The IT crowd. The IT crowd is the british version of the Big bang theory. My most favourite book series is Uncle john's bathroom readers and fantasy novels.

This Week's word...BEGINNINGS.

This week's word.....BEGINNINGS.

It was actually a pretty insightful week!

It began with me wondering how I can best make my class not only a center for learning, but a place where students experience science and build memories that last a lifetime. I thought it was going going to be fairly average, with lots of opportunity still for students to expand their minds as per usual.

Little did I know how the week would unfold.

A trip to the Telus World of Science on Monday withe @beebuzzers, @dwreck and our grade 9 class started it off with a bang! We watched HUBBLE on IMAX, and it was so good...it was COSMIC. We threw in a digital scavenger hunt for the kids and it turned out to be a VERY cool afternoon!

Tuesday was spent with the grade 7's as they were collaborating on a Google Doc in preparation for Friday's "Hands On" and "Minds On" activity that will prepare them for creating their Cardboard Boats in a few weeks! It has been a lot of research, but it will pay off at the end of the month.

The grade 8's have been working on their Circulatory System Passports....a way for students o become more independent in thier studies and mix art and science in their Discovery Books. We also spent Tuesday creating a large body model in class and demonstrated how a blood cell travels around the body! All of this weeks work will culminate with a Pig's Heart Dissection on Friday!

Behold.....my attempt an the inner workings of a blood vessel!

The grade 9's spent the week filming their pace videos that will be uploaded to the class website first and then onto YouTube! I had a goal of having kids beginning to create content for the web!

Finally, our Bamfield club dissected a seastar and have a field trip to Big Al's Aquarium next week! We are gearing up for a trip in two years to take kids to Bamfield! EXCITING! We also found out that the Vancouver Aquarium will be arriving on A. Blair McPherson's doorstep in May! Details to come on this awesome opportunity!

Busy week to say the least....next week can't get better...can it? I can't wait for next week to begin.

Beginnings. That's the word.

This Week's Word......COSMOS.

COSMO TV

This upcoming Sunday, Neil Degrasse Tyson's "Cosmos" will air...a revolutionary science show that will be a truly great experience and will no doubt cause many kids to become passionate about science.

They will be talking about numerous topics and answer MANY qquestions that you have locked away!

Watch it. You will NOT regret it!

In the meantime....check this out!

What questions do you hope it answers? Leave your question below....

COSMOS.

Growing up so Fast

Exactly one month ago, I welcomed an 8-week-old bouncing ball of fur into my home and family. He weighed 10.4 pounds, and won my heart with a lick to the face.

That was then.

Now, I have a hyperactive, crazy 20.8 pound, 3-month old pup. Is one jog in this cursed weather not enough?

The first time I saw Blizzard had been on a Saturday. He was just shy of 7 weeks old, and was one of 3 males in his litter of 11. Bursting with anticipation, we had rounded the corner to a nice farm, and walked into a pen of fluffy pups.

'twas love at first lick.

A week later, the preparations were made, and we drove back to bring him home.

Blizzard at 6.5 weeks

We were taken to a giant fluffy tornado of limbs and noses, and the biggest one of the bunch was placed in our arms. "Is this him?" I wondered. But there was no mistake. He was the only white male.

He weighed in at 10.4 pounds that day. Did I forget to mention that he was only two months old?

We brought him home to our pathetic puppy pen, designed for a smaller pup. Modifications were made, and we thought he was good to sleep in the pen till the crate arrived.

We thought wrong.

Blizzard's first day home (8 weeks)

Sometime the next week, I suddenly had difficulty holding him. My light little pup now weighed 13.4 pounds.

It doesn't seem like much, but that's a 1/3 increase in weight. Not much happened this week.

This week.

The next week, surprisingly, Blizzard hadn't gained a single pound. But no one was focusing on his growth rate. Something terrible happened.

It was during this week, that the big escape occured.

One morning, I dashed downstairs to take him out, and as I groggily fumbled around in search of the leash, hand met fur.

Innocent, cute little Blizzard had escaped his pen, soaked the carpet, stank up the house, chewed on everything, terrorized the poor cat, and ate all the cat food.

That was the last day anyone saw the pen.

Blizzard the escape artist at 9 weeks
Not much happened during the next three weeks, but now, he's doubled his weight, and his trouble-making capacity.

Every time I turn my back, he will dart off and grab my camera in his jaws, running off with it.

Yesterday, I took him to the offleash with his ball for a game of fetch.

He went chasing after that little ball, bringing it back each time.

I decided to give him a real treat, poised the ball behind my ear and whipped it as far as I could. Blizzard had a wild look in his eyes as he darted after it.

But as he reached about 6 feet away from me, he stopped short, and returned. He didn't want to leave me.

What? Me? I didn't chew up those slippers (12 weeks)
Where has time gone? How did he grow so fast? I blink, and he's sprouted another 5 pounds!

What are your dog stories?
